Mexico’s foreign minister: Paying for border wall ‘totally unacceptable’

(CNN)Mexico’s top diplomat has said the proposition that his government would buy President Donald Trump’s planned boundary wall was “totally unacceptable,” leading to the cancellation of both nations’ leaders’ first assembly.

Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray told journalists Thursday that Mexico honored the US’ prerogative to secure its boundaries but that Mexico “simply cannot accept the concept of a neighbor paying for your wall.”
Mexico’s President Enrique Pea Nieto canceled a meeting with Trump that had been set for next week after renewed tensions erupted over Trump’s strategy to create a wall on the boundary.

He added that Mexico is not going to respond on Trump’s 20% tax proposition until “we see action.”
“Let us not place an excessive amount of energy or focus into something which will be conjecture. I am able to let you know that in the event that you tax exports from Mexico to the United States, you are likely to make matters including avocados, to appliances to flat screen TVs more high-priced and that’s definitely going to be covered by the American consumer.”
“Let’s not devote too much time onto something that is speculation.”
