Obama held a campaign event for Harris in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – the swing state with the highest number of electoral college votes. “Kamala is as prepared for the job as any nominee for president has ever been,” Obama said. “And in the White House she will have an outstanding partner in governor Tim Walz. Tim is a veteran. He’s a teacher. He’s a coach. He’s a hunter.” Walz has a record of working with Republicans and Democrats to get things done, Obama said. “He can also take a vintage truck apart and put it together. Do you think Donald Trump can do that? For that matter, do you think Donald Trump has ever changed a tyre in his life?” The crowd laughed.

Later, Harris held an event in Phoenix, Arizona – where 80% of voters cast their ballots early in 2020. The swing state has 11 electoral college votes. Unlike Obama in his speech, Harris did not tell the crowd to stop when they booed –they were doing so as she talked about Project 2025. “I can’t believe they put that in writing,” she says. “They’re out of their minds.” She spoke to an extremely enthusiastic crowd.

Donald Trump outlined his economic proposals in a speech to the Detroit Economic Club, and could not stop himself from insulting the most populous city in swing state Michigan. Referring to Kamala Harris, Trump said: “Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she is your president. You’re going to have a mess on your hands.” Detroit’s Democratic mayor, Mike Duggan, had this to say about Donald Trump insulting the city during his visit today: “Detroit just hosted the largest NFL Draft in history, the Tigers are back in the playoffs, the Lions are headed to the Super Bowl, crime is down and our population is growing. Lots of cities should be like Detroit. And we did it all without Trump’s help.”

Joe Biden was salty when reporters covering his speech on the response to hurricanes Milton and Helene asked him if he planned to talk to Donald Trump about the misinformation he has been spreading about the storm. “Are you kidding me?” the president replied. Then, addressing Trump himself, Biden said: “Mr president Trump, former president Trump, get a life, man. Help these people.” Asked if he planned to call Trump, Biden replied: “No!”

Kamala Harris was asked to name three virtues that her opponent in next month’s election, Donald Trump, possesses, and was able to come up with one.

n At the end of her town hall for Spanish-language network Univision in Las Vegas on Thursday, the Associated Press reports, audience member Teresa Djedjro, 48 and originally born in Mexico, asked Harris to, “Please give me three virtues that Trump has.”

n Harris laughed and thanked her for the question before saying, “I know that the vast majority of us has so much more in common than what separates us.” Then she made clear that is not the case for herself and the former president, saying Trump’s approach to politics, “pains me” while singling out his ”us versus them” approach.

n “I don’t think that’s healthy for our nation, and I don’t admire that,” Harris said. “And I’m quite critical of it, coming from someone who wants to be president of the United States.”

n Taking another stab at a compliment, she offered, “I think Donald Trump loves his family and I think that’s very important,” only to continue, “But I don’t really know him. I only met him one time … so I don’t really have much more to offer you.”

n Trump is holding his own Univision town hall next week, after the original gathering in Miami was postponed due to Hurricane Milton. Still, he too has had little nice to say about Harris during the campaign, calling her “mentally impaired.”

The electoral college is a group of 538 people, called electors, who officially cast their votes for the US president after citizens have voted. This is a requirement outlined in the US constitution. The electors are chosen by political parties in each of the US’s 50 states ahead of the election.

Different states have different numbers of electoral college votes, with the number decided based on the census. The number of votes is equal to its total congressional delegation: the number of senators plus the number of representatives. While not a state, the District of Columbia – as in Washington DC – is allocated three electoral college votes.

This is why the total is 538: 100 senators plus 435 representatives plus three for DC.

A candidate needs more than half – or at least 270 – of the electoral college votes to win. In most states, all of the electoral college votes from the state go to the same candidate. The exceptions are Maine and Nebraska, which allocate two electoral votes to the state popular vote winner, and then one electoral vote to the popular vote winner in each congressional district.

n

Ethel’s husband, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, was one of my heroes, inspiring an entire generation to make real that promise for all Americans. Together, they were guided by values that were the same as those my grandparents and parents taught me around the kitchen table: Everyone is entitled to be treated with dignity and respect. We each have an obligation to one another, to give hate no safe harbor, and to leave no one behind.

n After his shattering death, Ethel showed our whole nation a way forward, turning pain into purpose and continuing his march toward civil rights and social justice, an end to poverty at home, and securing peace abroad — all while raising their 11 children. Four years later, when I lost my own wife and infant daughter, Ethel was always there for me and my sons. She helped us find strength and perseverance. She taught us how to channel grief into the service of a greater good.

It does not look like Donald Trump and Kamala Harris will debate again prior to the 5 November election. Yesterday evening, the former president declared “THERE WILL BE NO REMATCH!”. In response, Harris’s campaign manager today said Trump was doing “a disservice to the American people”, and announced the vice-president would hold a live town hall in Pennsylvania on 23 October. Separately, Ethel Kennedy died at the age of 96. The widow of Robert F Kennedy, the Democratic New York senator and former attorney general who was assassinated while campaigning for the presidency in 1968, Ethel Kennedy later became a noted campaigner for human rights. Barack Obamaremembered Kennedy, to whom he awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014, as “an emblem of enduring faith and hope, even in the face of unimaginable grief”.

The Gateway Pundit, the far-right news website that played a critical role in spreading false information about the 2020 election, has settled a defamation lawsuit with Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, two Georgia election workers it falsely accused of wrongdoing.

n

Notice of the settlement was filed in circuit court in Missouri, where Freeman and Moss had sued the site for defamation. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed in the filing.

n

The two women have settled suits with One America News, another far-right outlet. But the settlement with the Gateway Pundit is significant because the site was particularly influential in peddling false claims about the election.

n

The site’s founder, Jim Hoft, had refused to concede that the site said anything false about the women, even though the state quickly debunked accusations of wrongdoing and a longer investigation formally cleared them. The site had declared bankruptcy in an attempt to delay the case, but a judge dismissed the effort earlier this year.

“The Governor said they are still assessing the damage across the state. He thanked the president for the extensive federal support to prepare for and respond to the storm. The president reiterated that he will provide any support the state needs to speed response and recovery,” the White House said.

After a short-lived campaign for the White House, DeSantis is now backing Donald Trump and routinely criticizes Biden, but the pair have put their differences aside repeatedly to collaborate on hurricane response over the past three years.

The presidential race may be anyone’s to lose, but the GOP has long been viewed as the favorite to take the Senate back in November.

The Democrats have a 51-49 majority in the chamber, but are almost certain to lose one seat due to West Virginia senator Joe Manchin’s retirement. Their only hope of keeping control next year is to win the re-election of senators representing red states Montana and Ohio, or pick up seats in Texas and Florida, both Republican territory. Even if they manage to win 50 seats, a Donald Trump victory would make them the minority party, as JD Vance would cast the tie-breaking vote to put the GOP in control.

A just-released poll from the New York Times and Siena College shows Democratic candidates trailing in three of those states. In Montana, incumbent Jon Tester is behind his Republican challenger Tim Sheehy by seven points – a result that, if confirmed, would be enough to flip the chamber to the GOP on its own.

As for those pickup opportunities, the poll indicates they are not looking so good for Democrats. In Texas, incumbent Ted Cruz is up by four points over Democrat Colin Allred, while in Florida, Rick Scott has a whopping nine-point advantage over his challenger Debbie Mucarsel-Powell.

As the 2024 election enters its final weeks, Voters of Tomorrowsays it has made more than 5 million “direct contacts” with young people – a milestone for the gen Z-led voter outreach organisation.

“This election will be decided by a few thousand voters in key battleground states – and they could very well be young people,” said Santiago Mayer, the 22-year-old executive director of Voters of Tomorrow. “That’s why every contact we make is critical.”

With voting already under way in many states, the teens and twentysomethings behind the group say they’re just getting started. Mayer said the group, which endorsed Kamala Harris, was “on track to more than triple” their effort, which includes making phone calls, sending texts and organizing their friends, families and classmates.

Much of their recent work was focused on voter registration, but as deadlines close they are shifting to making sure young people have a plan for how to vote on election day. It looks like Donald Trump and Kamala Harris will not be debating again before the 5 November election. While the vice-president’s campaign insisted the invitation for a second debate remained on the table, Trump, in a Truth Social post written in his customary all-caps style, yesterday evening said: “THERE WILL BE NO REMATCH!” He made a point of mentioning Harris’s comment days ago that she would not do anything differently than Joe Biden, words the GOP has seized on to argue her election would represent a continuation of the unpopular president’s policies.

With that apparently settled, let’s talk about the state of the race. Less than four weeks to election day, there still is no clear frontrunner. Per our own tracker, Harris has an aggregate lead in five of the swing states expected to decide the race, and Trump in two, Arizona and Georgia. But their margins are slim, and every day brings new polling that often undercuts assumptions about the state of the race. Consider surveys released by Quinnipac University yesterday that found Harris leading in perhaps the most vital swing state, Pennsylvania, but trailing Trump in Michigan and Wisconsin. That data flies in the face of other polls that show her performing better in the latter two battlegrounds but trailing in Pennsylvania, or winning all three.

Summary

Here are the key developments from today:

  • Obama held a campaign event for Harris in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – the swing state with the highest number of electoral college votes.

  • Later, Harris held an event in Phoenix, Arizona – where 80% of voters cast their ballots early in 2020.

  • Donald Trump outlined his economic proposals in a speech to the Detroit Economic Club, and could not stop himself from insulting the most populous city in swing state Michigan.

  • Joe Biden was salty when reporters covering his speech on the response to hurricanes Milton and Helene asked him if he planned to talk to Donald Trump about the misinformation he has been spreading about the storm. “Are you kidding me?” the president replied. Then, addressing Trump himself, Biden said: “Mr president Trump, former president Trump, get a life, man. Help these people.” Asked if he planned to call Trump, Biden replied: “No!”

  • As former president Barack Obama was preparing to hit the campaign trail for Harris, former first lady, Michelle Obama, through her national, non-partisan voting initiative When We All Vote has relaunched Party at the Polls, the organization’s program to increase voter turnout.

  • Bill Clinton is going to hit the campaign trail for Kamala Harris, focusing on battleground states in the south. A spokesperson for the Harris campaign confirmed the news about the former US president and husband to Hillary Clinton on X, writing “The Harris campaign unleashes the Big Dog.” Clinton will travel to Georgia on Sunday and later make a stop in North Carolina.

  • Gateway Pundit, a rightwing website, settled a defamation lawsuit brought by two Georgia election workers who were targeted by conspiracy theorists after the 2020 vote.

  • New polling finds Democratic candidates trailing in Montana, Texas and Florida’s Senate races. If the trend is confirmed, it will likely mean the GOP gains control of the chamber.

  • Voters of Tomorrow, a youth advocacy group that has endorsed Harris, says it has hit a milestone of more than five million direct contacts with young voters.

“And so Arizona I ask you: are you ready to make your voices heard? Do we believe in freedom? Do we believe in opportunity? Do we believe in the promise of America? And are we ready to fight for it?”

With that, Harris ends her remarks.

She is wearing, by the way, a tan suit – which may or may not be a wink to Obama starting his campaigning for her today.

Some context:

Trump should “never again stand behind the seal of the President of the United States of America,” Harris says.

The crowd’s enthusiasm has not waned.

“The baton is in our hands. Because we here know what is at stake, and we love our country, we love our country,” Harris says.

The crowd chants “USA! USA!”

“And one of the highest forms of patriotism is to fight for the ideals of our country, and to fight for the promise of America,” she says.

She reminds the crowd that early voting has started, and that people can cast their ballot any time from now until voting day on 5 November.

As mentioned earlier, early voting is the norm in Arizona: 80% of Arizona voters submitted ballots before election day in 2020.

Ahead of Harris’s remarks, she met with Native American youth leaders from across the state, according to the campaign.

In Phoenix, Harris turns now to abortion.

“One does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree: the government should not be telling her what to do,” she says.

Arizona has the chance at state level to vote Yes on Proposition 139, Harris says.

This is proposition 139, from ballotpedia:

A “yes” vote supports amending the state constitution to provide for the fundamental right to abortion that the state of Arizona may not interfere with before the point of fetal viability (defined as the point of pregnancy when there is significant chance of the survival of the fetus outside of the uterus without the application of extraordinary medical measures) unless justified by a compelling state interest (defined as a law or regulation enacted for the limited purpose of improving or maintaining the health of the individual seeking abortion care that does not infringe on that individual’s autonomous decision making).

A “no” vote opposes amending the state constitution to provide for the fundamental right to an abortion.

Here is Kamala Harris’s answer to a woman who asked her what she would do about undocumented people living in the US. Her mother died before becoming a citizen:

Unlike Obama earlier, Harris does not tell the crowd to stop when they boo –they’re booing as she talks about Project 2025.

“I can’t believe they put that in writing,” she says. “They’re out of their minds.”

“We need to have policies that see you and lift you up knowing that it is a matter of dignity,” Harris says.

The crowd continues to go wild – this is one of the most enthusiastic crowds of the campaign events I have covered during this election campaign.

A large banner at the back of the venue reads “Arizona votes early”. Early voting began yesterday in the state, where 80% of voters submitted ballots before election day in 2020.

She is repeating lines from previous speeches.

“Instead from Donald Trump it’s the same old tired playbook. He has no plans, no plans, for how he would address the needs of the American people. He is only focused on himself. Well folks, it’s time to turn the page. And America is ready for a new wave forward.”

This crowd is notably energetic and enthusiastic. Harris is almost shouting to speak over them. There are loud cheers, so far, after almost every sentence.

Harris starts her remarks by saying “we must honour tribal sovereignty, embrace our trust in treaty obligations, and ensure tribal self-determination.”

She promises to “defend those principles always” as president.

Harris spoke earlier on Thursday at Rawhide Western Center, an old-west venue on the Gila River Indian Community reservation just outside the Phoenix suburbs.

In summer 2023, Harris was the first sitting president or vice-president to visit the tribe. She was greeted by Native American dancers before speaking at a school in a small reservation town called Komatke.

Harris, trying to calm the cheering crowd, says “OK come on, come on we got some work to do.”

“Well let me just say, it is good to be back in Arizona,” she says.

Kamala Harris on stage in Phoenix, Arizona

Democratic presidential nominee and US vice-president Kamala Harris is on stage in Phoenix, Arizona.

She is speaking to a large and energetic crowd – cheering has been going on for over a minute.

Kamala Harris will speak at a campaign event in Phoenix, Arizona, in just under half an hour’s time. We’ll bring that to you live.

Arizona is a swing state – with 11 electoral college votes.

Biden became the first Democrat since 1996 to win the state in 2020. The last democrat to win the state before Bill Clinton in 1996 was Harry Truman in 1948.

At that town hall in Las Vegas, Harris was also asked about complaints that federal officials have bungled disaster recovery efforts. She responded, “In this crisis — like in so many issues that affect the people of our country – I think it so important that leadership recognises the dignity” to which people are entitled.

“I have to stress that this is not a time for people to play politics,” Harris added.

From the press pool report on Kamala Harris’s town hall:

In another notable exchange, an undecided voter said he was upset with the way President Biden had been treated by the Democratic party and questioned how Harris had become the party’s nominee.

Harris thanked the voter for being so “candid,” and praised Biden for a “decision that I think history will show was probably one of the most courageous that a president could make.”

The VP said she had been “partners” with Biden for the last four years and was “honored to have earned the Democratic nomination.” She said she had been endorsed by a range of people and groups, including Republicans, and said the election offered a choice between democracy and autocracy: “We are literally having a choice as the American people about choosing a path either that is about rule of law, democracy or something that is about admiring dictators.”
